Share Alliance’s Intergenerational rebalancing conference

Reimagining Opportunity: Why the Inter-generational Rebalancing Conference Mattered

The Inter-generational Rebalancing Conference, held on 14–15 May 2026 at the Institute for Fiscal Studies in London, brought together economists, policymakers, philanthropists, technologists and social innovators to explore one of the defining challenges of our time: how to create a fairer balance of opportunity between generations.

Against a backdrop of rising inequality, increasing housing costs and growing economic pressures on younger people, the conference examined innovative ways to unlock resources and opportunities for disadvantaged young people, both in the UK and internationally.

A New Perspective on Wealth and Opportunity

A central theme of the conference was the need to think differently about wealth transfer and its role in society. While inheritance is often viewed as a private matter between families, speakers and delegates explored how resources generated throughout the human life cycle could be used more broadly to support young people who might otherwise be left behind.

Hosted by the Share Alliance, the event focused on how legacies, philanthropy and emerging technologies could help create new pathways to opportunity and contribute to a more equitable society.

Learning from Proven Success

The conference drew on the practical experience of the Share Foundation, whose programmes have demonstrated the impact that targeted interventions can have on the lives of young people. Delegates heard how initiatives providing starter capital accounts and incentivised learning opportunities for young people in care have helped promote financial inclusion and support positive long-term outcomes.

These examples provided a strong foundation for discussions about how similar approaches could be expanded and adapted on a larger scale.

Bringing Together Leading Voices

One of the conference’s strengths was its ability to bring together leading voices from across sectors. Contributors shared insights on the economic, social and policy changes needed to address inter-generational inequalities and improve social mobility.

The diversity of perspectives encouraged meaningful debate and highlighted the importance of collaboration between government, charities, businesses and communities when tackling complex social challenges.

Why the Conversation Was So Important

Throughout the two-day event, delegates reflected on the significant barriers many young people continue to face, including challenges around financial security, education, employment and housing. At the same time, discussions recognised the unprecedented transfer of wealth expected to take place between generations in the coming decades.

The conference explored how these trends could be harnessed to create broader social benefit, asking not only how wealth is passed on, but how it can be used to expand opportunity and improve life chances for future generations.

Looking Ahead

While the conference marked the culmination of important conversations, it also served as a starting point for future action. By bringing together evidence, innovation and practical experience, the event generated fresh ideas and strengthened partnerships focused on creating a fairer and more inclusive society.

The Inter-generational Rebalancing Conference demonstrated the value of bringing diverse voices together to address shared challenges. For those in attendance, it provided both inspiration and practical insight into how resources, policy and philanthropy can work together to help ensure that every young person has a greater chance to fulfil their potential, regardless of their starting point.
